Prima Materia

This will be a slightly improvised article - I'm trying to consolidate my thoughts here regarding the game concept I want to implement in my game "Jung's Labyrinth" (https://store.steampowered.com/app/709710/).

Psychological Interpretation of Fairy Tales, page 128

First, a quote from Marie-Louise Von Franz's book, transcribed:

Alchemy states certain developmental stages through which prima materia passes in its transformation into gold:

It is Nigredo - the Latin word for the blackness of matter exposed to fire; Albedo - the white substance that transforms into silver through washing; Rubedo - the redness that transforms into gold through further heating.

In the development of the individual, albedo means the first clear conscious perception of the unconscious, which is accompanied on one hand by the possibility of achieving an objective attitude, and on the other hand by the decrease of consciousness that is necessary to achieve such states.

Albedo means a cool, distanced attitude, a phase when things appear distant and indefinite, as if we were observing them in moonlight.

It is said that in Albedo, femininity and the moon reign, because it is a phase of sensitive, open attitude towards the unconscious.

Washing here means the torment of becoming aware of one's own shadow, while the previous stage - Nigredo - designates the first terrible encounter with the shadow.

Alchemists call this the rough work. With the onset of albedo, the work becomes easier.

Simple heating then transforms albedo into rubedo, which is ruled by the sun and heralds a new state of consciousness.

Sun and moon, the red slave and the white lady are opposites that sometimes conclude a marriage - it is an image of the unification of objective consciousness with the anima, masculine logos with feminine eros.

Thanks to this unification, more and more energy gradually flows into consciousness, causing a positive relationship with the world and the ability to love and create more.

Alchemical Phases

1. Nigredo - black; the first step on the path to the Philosopher's Stone/Goal of individuation; encounter with the Shadow; the symbol is the raven 2. Albedo - white, silver; the symbol is the dove; according to Jung, this is the phase of Anima integration 3. Xanthosis - yellow; the transformation of silver into gold (Luna into Sol); an intermediate step between the integration of Anima and Senex; according to Jung, yellow is Senex; 4. Rubedo - red; according to Jung, this is directly the Essential Self, which has already achieved wholeness.

p. 163: A woman who loses herself in the sea of the unconscious is indefinite in herself and lacks both critical understanding and stronger will. Such an indefinable woman easily plays the role of anima for a man. In fact, she plays this role all the better the more unconscious she is. Therefore, women often resist their awakening; as soon as they gain such awareness, they lose the ability to play the anima - the sorceress - and lose their power over men. Similarly, a man immersed in the unconscious behaves like a feminine animus. A man who is possessed - e.g. Hitler - has all the features of anima; he is gripped by every emotion, is full of unfounded opinions and expresses himself sentimentally and pedantically.
